Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate for the 2024 elections, has attributed the party’s recent electoral defeat to deep-rooted internal conflicts and persistent governance issues.

Despite the NPP’s ambition for a third consecutive term, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) triumphed, securing John Mahama’s return to the presidency.

In an insightful interview  NAPO explained that while economic challenges played a role, the true cause of the NPP’s defeat lay in unresolved organizational flaws and internal party struggles. These governance issues have been a long-standing concern for the NPP, which has previously learned valuable lessons from similar setbacks.

He highlighted the disillusionment among party members, citing instances where MPs struggled to motivate voters, emphasizing that these problems were not rooted in economic mismanagement but in the party’s failure to address its internal crises.

NAPO referenced past mistakes, such as the 1992 parliamentary boycott, to illustrate how the party has adapted over time. He stressed that despite setbacks, change within the NPP and the country was inevitable, urging the party to confront its challenges head-on for a brighter future.
