Story Highlights
  • Eastern and Western Regions rescheduled to December 5 due to ballot security issues
  • Early votes to be tallied with general election results on December 7
  • National Election Security Taskforce ensures peaceful and transparent proceedings

The Electoral Commission (EC) is conducting the Special Voting exercise today, December 2, across 14 regions of Ghana, with the Eastern and Western Regions excluded.

This vital prelude to the December 7 polls enables security personnel, media professionals, and election officials—who will be engaged on election day—to cast their ballots in advance. An estimated 131,478 voters, representing 0.007% of Ghana’s registered electorate of 18,741,159, are expected to participate.

The Eastern and Western Regions are exempt from today’s exercise due to a security seal breach requiring the recall and reprinting of ballot papers. Special Voting in these two regions is now set for Thursday, December 5.

Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has assured the public of a seamless and credible voting process. She reaffirmed the EC’s dedication to addressing concerns to maintain election integrity.

Eligible voters must present valid identification and adhere to guidelines at polling centres open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. While votes cast today will not be counted immediately, they will be tallied on December 7 alongside the general election results at Constituency Collation Centres.

Security has been reinforced under the National Election Security Taskforce, while political party agents and independent observers are monitoring the process to ensure transparency and fairness.

The EC is calling for calm and cooperation from all stakeholders, highlighting that these efforts aim to guarantee a free, fair, and credible electoral process.
