PHOTO: Akufo-Addo Arrives in Azerbaijan for COP29 Summit
Ghana’s President arrives for key climate talks, while Vice President Bawumia steps in at home

- Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will temporarily lead Ghana during the President's absence
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana touched down in Azerbaijan on November 10 to take part in the 29th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29).
Akufo-Addo was welcomed at Heydar Aliyev International Airport by Azerbaijan’s Justice Minister, Farid Ahmadov, and other officials.
During his absence, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will temporarily assume presidential duties, as outlined in Ghana’s constitution.
Article 60(8) of Ghana’s 1992 constitution stipulates that, “whenever the President is absent from Ghana or if for any other reason unable to perform the functions of his office, the Vice President shall perform the functions of the President until the President return or is able to perform his functions.”
