VIDEO: Dumsor Not Due to Power Deficit, It’s a Technical Issue – Energy Minister

Energy Minister John Jinapor dismisses claims of power generation shortfall, explaining that recent outages are due to excessive load on electricity transformers, not a lack of supply.

Story Highlights
  • Ghana generates enough electricity, even exporting 300MW to neighboring countries
  • Power outages are caused by excessive load on transformers, not a supply shortage
  • NDC government stabilized the power sector despite inheriting massive debt

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has attributed the recent power outages (Dumsor) in parts of the country, particularly in regional capitals, to the overloading of electricity transformers.

According to him, Ghana currently generates sufficient power, with about 300 megawatts being exported to neighboring countries. This, he emphasized, proves that there is no power generation shortfall, making load shedding unnecessary despite calls for it.

Mr. Jinapor further stated that while the previous NDC administration under John Dramani Mahama inherited a struggling power sector burdened with massive debt, strategic interventions helped stabilize the system. These efforts, he noted, have contributed to the current government’s ability to maintain power supply.
