Story Highlights
  • Ofori-Atta under probe for financial dealings, including National Cathedral payments and tax refund accounts
  • Initially declared wanted but later removed after confirming plans to return voluntarily
  • Claims he was abroad for medical reasons

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has expressed deep frustration over the ongoing criminal investigation against him by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), calling the situation both perplexing and unsettling.

In an open letter dated February 26, Ofori-Atta broke his silence, seeking to clarify the events surrounding the probe. His statement comes in response to the OSP’s initial issuance—and subsequent revocation—of a wanted notice against him.

The investigation focuses on various financial transactions, including the Strategic Mobilisation-GRA Contract, ECG-BXC contract termination, National Cathedral payments, ambulance procurement, and the Tax Refund Account.

Despite the scrutiny, the OSP acknowledged receiving official communication from Ofori-Atta about his voluntary return, leading to his removal from the wanted list—though authorities warned that failure to appear as promised could trigger further action.

Describing the ordeal as shocking, Ofori-Atta recounted that he was abroad for medical reasons when the OSP summoned him for an in-person meeting regarding alleged corruption cases. He maintained that he was neither the initiating nor implementing minister for the matters under investigation. His lawyers had offered to cooperate on his behalf, but the OSP declined, demanding his physical presence.

Matters escalated when, on February 11, armed National Security operatives raided his home. According to Ofori-Atta, the Special Prosecutor later accused him of orchestrating the raid himself and staging an international campaign to portray himself as a fugitive.

“I am as puzzled and dismayed as I suspect you must be,” Ofori-Atta wrote, lamenting the dramatic turn of events.
