Tidal Wave Victims Deserve Better! Mahama Calls for Urgent Relocation
President criticizes flood-prone resettlement project, urges relocation and construction of a second sea defense wall to protect affected communities.

- Mahama says resettlement site is in a flood-prone area, making it unsafe
- Criticizes project, calling the construction “shoddy” and inadequate
- Urges relocation of the site and acceleration of sea defense wall construction
President John Dramani Mahama has criticized the ongoing resettlement efforts for tidal wave victims in the Volta Region, describing the project as inadequate and poorly planned.
During a visit to Agavedzi and other affected areas, Mahama assessed the damage caused by the recent tidal waves, which displaced over 300 residents and destroyed numerous homes.
He expressed concern over the resettlement project, reportedly funded by Ghana Gas, arguing that it is being constructed in a flood-prone area, making it unsuitable for long-term habitation.
“I don’t think the project was well thought through. The work is shoddy, and the site itself is prone to flooding. If it floods, those buildings will also be affected, making them unfit for purpose,” Mahama stated.
He urged authorities to reconsider the location of the resettlement project and prioritize the construction of a second phase of the sea defense wall to protect affected communities.
