Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, to uphold the independence of his office and avoid being drawn into political controversies.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, March 5, during Dr. Asiama’s appearance to address concerns over the cost of the BoG’s new headquarters, Afenyo-Markin cautioned against selective scrutiny of the central bank’s activities.
He recalled that in the 2015 State of the Nation Address, then-President John Dramani Mahama criticized the BoG for inadequate banking sector supervision.
Highlighting Dr. Asiama’s role as Deputy Governor at the time, Afenyo-Markin questioned whether Parliament was now being selective about the issues it chose to scrutinize.
“Mr. Governor, don’t allow yourself to become a pawn in political games. Your role is vital to the country’s economy, and I urge all stakeholders to avoid politicizing your office,” he advised.
He also called on the Majority in Parliament to approach economic discussions with caution, warning that their handling of such matters could impact Ghana’s financial stability.
His comments come amid heated debates over the BoG’s new headquarters, with the Minority questioning the process behind its approval, while the Majority defends its legitimacy.
