A 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck Hollywood as celebrities gathered for Oscars afterparties, just miles from the Dolby Theatre where the awards ceremony was held.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located in North Hollywood, and it occurred shortly after 10:00 PM local time. Attendees at the Vanity Fair afterparty reported a sudden jolt, with some screaming and observing high-rise buildings swaying.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the earthquake was felt across Los Angeles. No immediate reports of damage or injuries were received, and no tsunami alert was issued.

The Los Angeles Fire Department stated that the quake was felt throughout downtown Los Angeles but did not trigger an “Earthquake Mode” response, which involves widespread structural assessments.

This quake is one of approximately 40 that have occurred in Southern California since the beginning of March, although most were minor tremors. A 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck Malibu last month, and a significant 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Northern California in December prompted a brief tsunami alert.

BBC correspondents covering the Oscars reported noticeable shaking and alarmed reactions.

One resident described it as the strongest earthquake they had experienced, while BBC’s Emma Vardy, on the 15th floor of a media center, described the building swaying like jelly.
