President John Dramani Mahama has presented his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) in his second term, outlining key policies and initiatives aimed at revitalizing Ghana’s economy, enhancing security, and improving governance.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, February 27, the President emphasized his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating, “I have unveiled the state of the nation as I met it.”

Ghana Is Open for Business

Speaking on the country’s economic prospects, President Mahama declared, “Mr. Speaker, Ghana is open for business.” He highlighted the government’s strategy to drive economic growth through export diversification, foreign investment, and job creation. According to him, a new blueprint and a dedicated delivery unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will soon be launched with clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure that foreign engagements translate into tangible economic benefits.

Strengthening National Security

With the increasing security threats, especially along Ghana’s borders, the President assured the nation of the government’s proactive stance in regional security cooperation. “Because of emerging security threats, particularly in the Sahel, Ghana remains committed to security initiatives,” he stated. He further announced the appointment of a Special Envoy to sustain diplomatic relations and facilitate the reintegration of Sahelian nations into the regional bloc.

Improving Passport Services

In an effort to enhance public service efficiency, President Mahama announced plans to expand passport application centers nationwide. He emphasized that this initiative aims to cut down processing times to just seven days. “These comprehensive reforms at the Passport Office align with our vision of a 24-hour economy,” he stated, assuring citizens of improved access to essential services.

Labour and Pension Reforms

On labour administration, the President reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering harmonious industrial relations. He revealed that the National Tripartite Committee, led by the sector minister, will soon convene a National Labour Conference to address pressing concerns affecting both employers and employees. “The recommendations from this conference will shape government policies and programs,” he noted.

Addressing pension reforms, President Mahama assured that the government would uphold fiduciary responsibility in managing the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). He disclosed that the NPRA would fully automate its operations this year, a move he described as “critical to safeguarding the growing pension fund assets.”

Additionally, he announced an initiative aimed at increasing pension coverage in the informal sector, which currently stands at only 11%. He stated, “To ensure inclusivity, we will implement the Informal Sector Pension Inclusion Initiative to encourage participation in micro-pension schemes.”

Commitment to Decentralization and Local Governance

President Mahama acknowledged the longstanding challenges faced by local government officials, particularly Assembly members. He reiterated his commitment to providing them with modest allowances, stating, “I did promise to pay modest allowances to our Assemblymen and women. I am committed to that promise.”

Conclusion

In concluding his address, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to resetting Ghana for the better. “As we reset Ghana to serve Ghanaians better, our government will ensure transparency, accountability, and efficiency in all sectors,” he emphasized.

The address outlined bold reforms and policy directions, signaling a new chapter in Ghana’s governance under his leadership.
