President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep concern over Ghana’s economic crisis, acknowledging the severe hardships citizens are facing.

Delivering his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) in his second term on Thursday, February 27, in Parliament, he stressed the urgency of addressing the downturn, stating:

“The state of our nation is not good. Our economy is in crisis, and our people are suffering.”

Mahama attributed the challenges to rising inflation, high debt levels, and a struggling private sector—factors that have led to increased unemployment and a declining standard of living.

Despite these difficulties, the President made it clear that his approach is not to lament or shift blame but to take decisive action. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to stabilizing the economy through strategic policies aimed at boosting local industries, improving revenue generation, and managing public debt effectively.

“We cannot ignore the struggles of our people. My administration is committed to implementing bold reforms that will restore economic stability and bring relief to households and businesses,” he assured.

Mahama’s speech set the tone for a period of economic restructuring, focusing on solutions rather than excuses.
