A peace ceremony aimed at ending long-standing clashes between students of Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute took a violent turn on Tuesday, February 25, leaving at least five students severely injured and several others with minor wounds.
The event, held at Bawku Technical Institute, was organized by school authorities in collaboration with the Kpalwega traditional rulers to promote reconciliation. As part of the peace process, the traditional leaders proposed the burial of an okra stick—a symbolic ritual meant to signify the end of hostilities.
However, tensions flared during the ceremony, leading to a chaotic scene where students from both schools began hurling stones at each other, forcing an abrupt disruption.
The Bawku Divisional Police Command swiftly intervened to restore calm, while the injured students were rushed to Quality and Vineyard hospitals for medical attention.
Despite the violent interruption, school authorities and the Ghana Education Service (GES) proceeded with the ritual, successfully completing it with the participation of the senior prefects from both schools.
