In a decisive move to curb worsening sanitation issues, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has arrested and prosecuted sixteen individuals for violating environmental safety bye-laws.

The arrests stemmed from an enforcement operation aimed at tackling poor waste management in the Ashanti Regional capital, where approximately 2,000 tons of solid waste are generated daily.

Kwaku Poku, Head of the KMA Environmental Health Unit, revealed that the offenders—mostly residents of the central business district—were caught engaging in various sanitation violations, including indiscriminate dumping of waste, allowing filth to flow into public drains, and failing to maintain clean surroundings.

The culprits were subsequently arraigned before court and fined for their offenses.

The sanitation enforcement also extended to food production sites, with authorities shutting down an ice kenkey factory at Adehy3 Market due to poor hygiene. KMA and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) are intensifying efforts to regulate food safety standards and address environmental hazards.

Mr. Poku emphasized the need for collective action, stating that authorities are collaborating with the Kumasi Abattoir to tackle stray cattle and improve overall sanitation in the city.
