Karpowership Ghana Refutes Blame for Power Outages

Power producer denies shutdown claims, says it continues to supply 450MW despite $370M government debt

Story Highlights
  • Karpowership Ghana insists it is generating 450MW and has not shut down
  • The government owes Karpowership $370 million, affecting operations
  • The company is in talks with the Ministry of Energy to resolve financial challenges

Karpowership Ghana has strongly denied allegations that it is responsible for the recent power outages, emphasizing that it continues to generate electricity at full capacity despite the government’s outstanding $370 million debt.

The company acknowledged ongoing discussions with the government to resolve the accumulated debt, noting that non-payment of invoices is affecting its operations. However, it dismissed claims that its planned shutdown over the debt is the cause of the current electricity supply challenges.

Sandra Amarquaye, Communication Manager for Karpowership Ghana, clarified in an interview:

“We are not the reason for the recent outages. We haven’t shut down the powership. In fact, we are operating at maximum capacity. As of this morning, I checked, and we were producing 450MW of power to the national grid.”

Karpowership Ghana plays a vital role in stabilizing the national grid, supplying up to 450 megawatts (MW) of electricity through its fleet of floating power plants. Its operations are part of the broader Karpowership network, which supports Ghana’s energy needs, particularly during peak demand periods.

The company has been engaging the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition regarding the $370 million in outstanding financial obligations. The mounting debt highlights ongoing financial strains within the energy sector, raising concerns about the sustainability of power supply agreements.

Despite the significant arrears, Karpowership remains committed to working with stakeholders to find a fair and sustainable solution to the debt crisis while ensuring uninterrupted power supply for the nation.
