The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has issued a directive to all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region to fix and maintain faulty streetlights within their jurisdictions within 50 days.

The countdown begins on March 3, 2025, as part of an effort to enhance security and visibility across the national capital at night.

According to the minister, her office has already engaged the Ministries of Energy and Roads and Highways, both of which have responded positively to supporting the initiative within the stipulated period.

“I promised the people of this region that within my first 50 days in office, major highways would be properly illuminated,” Ms. Ocloo stated.

She made this declaration during a working visit to the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly on February 19, where she assessed the assembly’s progress and operational strategies.

The minister applauded some assemblies that had already implemented structured maintenance plans to sustain street lighting and improve public safety.

Despite challenges such as cable theft, Ms. Ocloo remains optimistic about meeting the 50-day target. “We are working tirelessly to ensure this directive is fully executed,” she assured.

To ensure compliance, she announced plans to visit all 29 MMDAs within the region.

Ms. Ocloo, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Shai Osudoku, emphasized that her leadership priorities include sanitation, waste management, public safety, and strengthening local governance.

She praised the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly for its strides in improving sanitation and encouraged participation in the upcoming Regional Sanitation Day on February 28, 2025.

“It is imperative that we strengthen waste management strategies, engage communities, and enforce sanitation regulations to maintain a hygienic environment,” she stressed.

A special monitoring team has been established at the Regional Coordinating Council to assess sanitation performance and reward the cleanest assembly.

Municipal Coordinating Director Emmanuel Baisie reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to collaborating with the minister to enhance service delivery and improve residents’ quality of life.
