  • Ghana and Nigeria should lead regional economic integration for West Africa’s progress

Former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated the urgent need for African nations to collaborate and build a self-sufficient continent rather than relying on foreign aid.

Speaking at the launch of former Nigerian President Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, Akufo-Addo urged African leaders to shift from donor dependency to strategic partnerships and sustainable economic policies.

“Too often, African nations look outside for solutions when the answers lie within our own borders,” he emphasized. “We must reject the notion that aid is the key to our development. No country has ever achieved lasting prosperity by depending on handouts.”

His remarks come at a time when Africa faces growing economic challenges, including inflation, mounting debt, and supply chain disruptions—many of which were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Akufo-Addo, a former ECOWAS Chair, called for stronger intra-African trade and investment, stressing that true progress lies in self-sufficiency and regional cooperation. He highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a game-changing initiative that could unlock the continent’s economic potential.

“If we are to overcome our historical economic struggles, we must fully embrace AfCFTA. Removing trade barriers and fostering economic integration will create the conditions necessary for sustainable growth,” he stated.

He also warned of the hidden costs of foreign aid, noting that it often comes with conditions that do not align with Africa’s long-term interests.

“Foreign aid is not free—it comes with strings attached. We must prioritize investments in our people, industries, and agriculture to ensure true self-reliance,” he asserted.

Akufo-Addo called for deeper collaboration between Ghana and Nigeria as a blueprint for regional economic progress.

“Ghana and Nigeria have shown that when we work together, we achieve more. We share a history, a culture, and a responsibility to lead West Africa towards economic independence,” he said, urging stronger partnerships in trade, energy, and technology.

In his closing remarks, he challenged African leaders to take bold steps in shaping the continent’s future.

“Africa’s future is in our hands. With visionary leadership, strategic investments, and a commitment to unity, we can build a prosperous, self-reliant, and globally respected continent.”
