Botswana: Relentless Rains Trigger Widespread Flooding, Schools and Roads Shut Down

Torrential downpours wreak havoc, displacing residents and damaging infrastructure as more rain looms.

Story Highlights
  • Heavy rains force school and road closures, damaging homes and businesses
  • Up to 50mm (2 inches) of rainfall could worsen conditions in the next 24 hours
  • Other parts of southern Africa also face heavy downpours and potential flooding

Days of relentless rainfall have unleashed severe flooding across Botswana, forcing the closure of schools and major roads.

Homes and businesses have sustained extensive damage, with forecasters warning that some areas could receive an additional 50mm (2 inches) of rainfall within the next 24 hours.

The government has cautioned that water accumulation in low-lying areas could trigger flash floods, further impacting infrastructure and property.

While the heavy downpour is expected to shift northward in the coming days, Gaborone and the southern regions may see drier conditions over the weekend. However, isolated heavy showers could worsen the ongoing flooding crisis.

Meanwhile, meteorologists predict that other parts of southern Africa will also experience intense rainfall in the coming days, heightening concerns of further weather-related disruptions.
