Bawku Conflict: Four, Including Infant, Burned Alive in Brutal Highway Attack
Security agencies in Walewale, North East Region, have confirmed the deaths of four individuals, including an infant, following a violent gun attack on a commercial bus traveling along the Walewale-Tamale highway.
Reports indicate the bus was traveling from Widana in the Pusiga District of the Upper East Region to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region when gunmen ambushed it near Kukua Loagri and set it ablaze.
Three adults and an infant were burned beyond recognition.
The attack occurred after the bus developed a mechanical fault and stopped overnight for repairs. As the driver and conductor resumed repairs the following morning, armed attackers opened fire indiscriminately and set the vehicle on fire. The gunmen fled into nearby thickets before law enforcement arrived.
This tragedy is the latest in a string of violent incidents along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway. Two days prior, another bus was ambushed and burned near Wulugu, claiming three lives.
Authorities suspect these attacks are linked to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict. In a separate incident, three individuals were killed last night in Gumyoko, Binduri District, during another armed attack believed to be related to the Bawku violence.
Security forces have intensified patrols along high-risk routes and urged travelers to remain vigilant
