GHS Launches Cholera Vaccination Campaign Today to Protect Lives

Over 300,000 residents in Accra to receive life-saving vaccines as cholera cases surge across Ghana

Story Highlights
  • Over 4,000 cholera cases reported across five regions, with 40+ deaths recorded
  • Oral cholera vaccines deployed to high-risk communities to prevent further spread
  • Poor sanitation and unsafe water identified as key drivers of the outbreak

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Ministry of Health have commenced a massive cholera vaccination campaign in Accra to combat the alarming rise in cases.

Starting today, February 14, the initiative aims to immunize over 300,000 residents in the capital to curb the spread of the deadly disease.

This critical intervention comes as Ghana grapples with a cholera outbreak that has affected over 4,000 people across five regions—Greater Accra, Eastern, Central, Ashanti, and Western—and claimed more than 40 lives.

The bacterial infection, which spreads through contaminated food and water, has been linked to poor sanitation, lack of access to clean water, and unhygienic food handling practices. Symptoms include severe diarrhea and dehydration, which can be fatal if untreated.

Health officials have warned that the outbreak could escalate without swift preventive measures. As part of the national response, oral cholera vaccines (OCV) are being deployed in high-risk communities, offering short-term protection and targeting areas with inadequate sanitation and water facilities.
