The Ghana Education Service (GES) has reversed a disciplinary action by Sawla Senior High School (SHS) in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region, instructing the school to recall over 30 students who were placed on indefinite suspension last Wednesday.

Anthony Kwasi Yeboah, the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Director of GES, revealed to JoyNews’ Isaac Nongya that the school acted beyond its authority in meting out such punishment. Consequently, the headmaster has been directed to recall the students without delay.

“Yes, they [students] had left the school before the headmaster and his assistant came to me [district education office] and told me about the suspension. So, I told him to recall the students because he has no authority to suspend them,” Mr. Yeboah emphasized.

To ensure compliance, Mr. Yeboah will visit the school on Wednesday to engage with management and confirm the students’ return to continue their academic work.

The suspension followed an investigation by a seven-member committee into allegations of immoral behavior and the possession of mobile phones on campus. Most of the affected students are second-year girls.

However, the indefinite suspension was imposed without consulting the district or regional GES directorates and without notifying parents. GES has assured the public that it will closely monitor the situation moving forward.
