  • Over 30 students, mostly girls, suspended indefinitely for possessing mobile phones and alleged immoral activities
  • Parents criticize the school for failing to officially inform them about the suspensions
  • Sawla SHS is grappling with past scandals and poor academic performance in the 2022 WASSCE

More than 30 students of Sawla Senior High School (SHS) in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region have been indefinitely suspended for alleged misconduct.

The majority of the suspended students, predominantly girls, were accused of violating Ghana Education Service (GES) regulations by bringing mobile phones to school. Reports suggest that some of these students were also involved in immoral activities on campus.

A seven-member investigative committee, set up by the school’s management, found all the accused students guilty of the allegations, leading to their suspension.

This incident adds to the school’s already troubled reputation, following previous cases of inappropriate tutor-student relationships. These cases resulted in the dismissal or suspension of some staff members.

Meanwhile, the recent suspensions have sparked outrage among parents, many of whom claim they were not officially informed about the school’s decision.

One frustrated parent questioned the school’s handling of the situation, stating, “If I entrusted my child into your care, why should I be asked to send her packing without official notification?”

Another parent, Madam Ferida Issahaku, lamented the lack of communication, saying, “I only heard about the suspension through a friend. I should have been informed. Now, I don’t know where my daughter is.”

The controversy comes on the heels of Sawla SHS’s poor academic performance in the 2022 WASSCE, where it ranked among the lowest in the country, contributing to the Savannah Region’s last-place position nationwide.
