Espanyol has accused Barcelona defender Mapi Leon of “violating the privacy” of their player, Daniela Caracas, during a Liga F derby between the two Barcelona-based clubs.
The incident occurred in the 15th minute of the match on Sunday when Leon and Caracas collided while the Espanyol player was defending a set-piece. Following the clash, Leon appeared to make contact with Caracas around the groin area.
Espanyol expressed their “total discontent and condemnation” of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media. Caracas, a Colombian international, has reportedly been subjected to “hundreds of social media insults” due to the incident, according to the club.
In response, Leon issued a statement on Monday denying any wrongdoing.
“At no time did I, nor was it my intention, to infringe upon the intimacy of my fellow professional Daniela Caracas,” Leon stated. “As the images show, it was part of a playing action in which she deliberately touched me, and I touched her leg, saying in reaction to the clash: ‘what’s up with you.'”
She continued, “There was no contact with her private parts, and certainly no intention. I insist, it was just part of the game and does not warrant the importance that has been attached to it.”
Leon also condemned the “harassment” Caracas has faced on social media, which she stated had “nothing to do with me” and offered her “most sincere support.”
Espanyol, in a statement on their website, condemned the incident as “unacceptable,” and emphasized the seriousness of the gesture. The club revealed that Caracas had been unable to react at the time but later realized the gravity of the situation. However, she chose not to respond angrily to avoid disciplinary action and harm to her team.
