  • Assafuah argues that some ministries, especially merged ones like Local Government and Chieftaincy, require more than one deputy minister
  • He acknowledges President Mahama's commitment to a lean government but questions whether the 60-minister cap is sufficient for effective governance
  • Assafuah suggests increasing the number of ministers to at least 65

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider his threshold of appointing 60 ministers and expand the number to address the workload in some ministries.

Speaking in an interview on Friday, February 7, 2025, Assafuah argued that some ministries require additional ministers or deputies due to the immense demands placed on them, particularly after mergers of key ministries.

Using his experience as a former Deputy Minister for Local Government, Assafuah noted that managing large sectors like the Ministry of Local Government, now merged with the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, is a daunting task for only one deputy minister.

He acknowledged President Mahama’s effort to maintain a lean government but expressed doubts about whether the current 60-minister cap is sufficient to deliver on the president’s resetting agenda. Assafuah urged the president to consider raising the number of ministers to at least 65, emphasizing that this could better address the needs of critical sectors like finance and local government.

“Some ministries are too large for one deputy minister. Reflect on the challenges and, if necessary, seek public approval to increase the number for the betterment of Ghana,” he advised.
