- WAEC promises fairness and transparency in resolving malpractice cases
- Incidents include copying, collusion, and smuggling unauthorized materials into exam halls
- Parents, candidates, and student unions demand swift resolution to withheld results
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that all withheld results of candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be released by February 28, 2025.
At a press conference on February 7, WAEC disclosed that investigations into alleged malpractices and irregularities are nearing completion. John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, assured stakeholders that the council is committed to resolving all cases of malpractice and releasing the results by the set deadline.
“The Council has continued its hearings for affected candidates and has been releasing results as appropriate. We assure all stakeholders that by February 28, all cases of malpractice will be finalized, and results released,” Mr. Kapi stated.
The announcement follows a legal showdown and threats of nationwide protests from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) over the delayed results. The High Court in Accra recently ordered WAEC to release the results, ruling that withholding them without sufficient justification was unfair.
WAEC confirmed that over 10,500 results were withheld due to suspicions of malpractice, including copying, smuggling unauthorized materials, and collusion during exams. Despite the controversies, WAEC urged all stakeholders to address the rising malpractice issues to preserve the integrity of the examination process.
