President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to prioritize healthcare reform by introducing the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares.
This initiative aims to provide financial assistance to individuals battling chronic illnesses such as kidney and liver diseases, high blood pressure, and cardiac conditions.
Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Central Region on February 6, Mr. Mahama emphasized the need for a robust healthcare system that alleviates the burden of medical expenses.
“We’ll prioritize healthcare by improving our hospitals and launching the Mahama Cares fund to support individuals with chronic diseases,” he announced.
In addition, Mahama revealed plans to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy, ensuring that all funds are channeled into the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to enhance treatment coverage for cardholders.
“This move will empower the NHIA to settle payments for treatments provided to National Health Insurance cardholders at healthcare facilities,” he stated.
The initiative underscores Mahama’s vision for an accessible and equitable healthcare system in Ghana.
