Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has suggested that the more than 2 million Ghanaians who abstained from voting in the 2024 general election could have swung the results.

He believes these non-voters were disillusioned with the Akufo-Addo administration, and their votes would have likely gone against the NPP. Boadu stated that the party could have lost an additional 20% of votes if these individuals had participated.

“We’re fortunate that 2.7 million people didn’t vote because their votes may have been against us, given their frustration with the government,” Boadu said in an interview on OTEC FM. “We appreciate their choice not to vote. If they had, we might have only received 20%.”

Boadu also pointed to internal NPP struggles, claiming the party’s failure to support Members of Parliament who lost in the primaries hurt their chances in the election. He urged the party to understand the reasons behind voter apathy and work to address those issues moving forward.
