  • A woman in a Nsoatreman jersey allegedly identified Pooley before the attack

Kumasi Asante Kotoko Team Security officer, Adongo, has narrated the tragic events that led to the fatal stabbing of Nana Pooley, known in private life as Yaw Frimpong, during Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League match against Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Konamansah Park in Nsoatre.

The incident occurred shortly after Kotoko suffered a 1-0 defeat due to a late goal from substitute Gabriel Bonnah.

According to Adongo, tensions were high even before kickoff, as Nsoatreman FC supporters attempted to prevent the Kotoko team bus from entering the stadium.

Speaking on the Lawson Sports Show with King Eben, Adongo recounted how he and his team ensured the players’ safe entry and warm-up, despite opposition from the home fans.

Tensions Started Before Kickoff

“Nsoatreman fans tried to prevent us from guiding the players, but eventually, understanding prevailed, and we were allowed to protect the team. We told the Nsoatreman FC fans, When you came to Kumasi, we treated you with hospitality, so why are you doing this to us?'” he said.

He explained that the hostility escalated throughout the match, reaching a boiling point when Kotoko officials attempted to interact with their players at halftime but were blocked by Nsoatreman supporters.

“During halftime, Baffour Awuah went to speak with the Nsoatreman players. When Kotoko’s Akwasi Appiah and Nana Apenkrah tried to approach their own players, Nsoatreman supporters blocked them,” he recounted.

He stated that this fueled further confrontations, and Pooley, in an effort to de-escalate tensions, stopped Akwasi Appiah from engaging with Nsoatreman’s owner Ignatius Baffour Awuah.

Deadly Ambush Outside the Stadium

“Baffour Awuah incited the Nsoatreman fans to remove me from the stadium, and they began beating me. They later dragged Pooley out as well,” Adongo recalled.

He further revealed that a woman wearing an Nsoatreman jersey was actively identifying targets. “She threw a stone at Pooley, but he dodged it,” he added.

He lamented that the tragic moment came when, amidst the chaos, an unidentified man emerged and suddenly stabbed Pooley. “Pooley screamed, ‘Eeii Kwadwo, he has stabbed me!'” Adongo recounted.

Adongo said attempts to stop the attacker were futile.

“One Habib tried to approach the culprit, but he was threatened with death. The assailant claimed he was from Berekum and had been contracted for the act.”

According to Adongo, a police officer initially pursued the culprit but inexplicably stopped and returned.

The tragic loss of Nana Pooley has sent shockwaves through the Ghanaian football community, raising serious concerns about fan violence and stadium security.
