Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, Ghana’s Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has proposed a reassessment of the country’s retirement age, which is currently set at 60.

During his vetting on January 30 before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, he argued that any changes to retirement age should align with Ghana’s economic capabilities and overall preparedness.

Dr. Pelpuo emphasized the necessity of a nationwide consensus before implementing such a crucial policy shift, urging for inclusive discussions on the future of the workforce.

He acknowledged the growing debate on whether the retirement age should be extended to 65 or even 70, especially as people remain capable of working.

He stated, “While many are advocating for a review due to the country’s economic situation, the decision must come through collective agreement, ensuring harmony across all sectors.”
