The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has started preparations for its upcoming 28-day maintenance shutdown, which is a routine part of its operational schedule.

WAPCo’s Takoradi Regulatory and Metering Station at the Aboadze Thermal Plant, is gearing up for the shutdown.

Engineer Benoni Owusu Ayeh, the Operations and Maintenance Manager for WAPCo West, assured that the company is confident it will complete the maintenance within the planned 28-day window.

He explained that the maintenance will also address issues with sub-sea valves, particularly those in the Tema and Cotonou areas, and will involve both subsea and onshore repairs.

“We will replace the sub-sea valves and carry out essential onshore activities. This is the longest shutdown, and we conduct it every five years,” Engineer Ayeh said. “We don’t typically shut down for such extended periods, but we’ve synchronized everything to make the most of this opportunity while ensuring the pipeline’s integrity remains intact.”

The shutdown follows a two-week delay in WAPCo’s offshore pipeline cleaning and inspection exercise, originally scheduled to begin on January 20, 2025.

The cleaning, known as “pigging,” will now commence on February 3, 2025, according to a WAPCo statement issued on January 15, 2025.
