In a groundbreaking achievement, kidney specialists and surgeons in the Ashanti Region have successfully performed the area’s first kidney transplant, bringing renewed hope to individuals battling chronic kidney disease.
The life-saving procedure was a collaboration between the Kidney Specialist Center and HopeXchange Medical Centre in Kumasi. It transformed the life of a man in his mid-forties, who had endured kidney disease for five years and spent a year on dialysis before opting for the transplant.
Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor, a consultant nephrologist and the lead specialist for the surgery, hailed the operation as a monumental step in Ghana’s kidney care. He revealed that the initial transplant cost approximately $25,000, with future procedures projected to range between $30,000 and $35,000.
Dr. Tannor assured patients of his team’s dedication to making kidney transplants a sustainable reality in the region. “This is something we are hoping will continue, and it has come to stay here in Kumasi,” he affirmed.
This medical milestone marks a turning point in reducing reliance on dialysis and improving access to advanced kidney care in Ghana.
