Ashanti Regional Minister-Designate, has pledged to complete the long-overdue Kumasi Press Centre and ensure its full operation.
Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 27, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the vital role of press freedom in holding governments accountable.
Responding to a question from Jerry Ahmed, the Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe, he underscored the importance of a strong and independent press.
“I will engage with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and regional chapter leaders to work together on restoring the Kumasi Press Centre, with the support of the central government,” he assured.
The Kumasi Press Centre, a project that began under the John Mahama administration, was making good progress under then-Ashanti Regional Minister Eric Opoku until 2014 when the project stalled after Opoku’s reassignment.
Since then, the press centre has remained unfinished, and journalists in the region have consistently called for its completion.
Dr. Amoakohene’s commitment has been met with cautious optimism, with many in the region hopeful that his efforts will finally bring the long-anticipated project to a successful conclusion.
