Jean Mensa Faces Fresh Petition for Removal as EC Chair Over Alleged Bias and Rights Violations

Petition cites disenfranchisement of SALL voters, constitutional breaches, and claims of partisan bias by EC leadership

Story Highlights
  • Petition highlights the exclusion of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe voters in the 2020 parliamentary elections
  • EC leadership accused of partisanship, incompetence, and undermining public trust in electoral processes
  • Petitioner urges Mahama to invoke Article 146 to restore confidence in Ghana's democracy

President John Mahama has been petitioned to initiate the removal of Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa.

The petition, filed on January 27, also seeks the dismissal of Deputy EC Chairs Samuel Tetteh, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, and EC member Dr. Peter Appiahene.

The petitioner alleges breaches of constitutional provisions, including incompetence, bias, and actions that erode public trust in the EC’s impartiality.

Citing Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution, the petition highlights the disenfranchisement of voters in Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) during the 2020 parliamentary elections.

This action, the petitioner claims, deprived SALL residents of parliamentary representation and may have influenced the balance of power in Ghana’s hung parliament.

Further allegations include poor management during the 2020 elections, errors in presidential election results, and overt partisanship by some commissioners. Notably, Dr. Bossman Asare and Dr. Peter Appiahene are accused of displaying political bias through past statements and actions.

The petitioner calls on President Mahama to act under Article 146 of the Constitution to restore confidence in Ghana’s electoral system. The Presidency is yet to respond to the matter.

Jean Mensa, appointed EC Chair in 2018, has previously faced similar petitions but remained in office.
