  • The current parliamentary session has been marked by more conflicts

Joseph Osei-Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has voiced his frustration with the performance of Ghana’s 8th Parliament, expressing that it has achieved very little.

In an interview, he characterized the current session as unfocused, plagued by controversies, and neglectful of its primary duty: lawmaking.

Joe Wise pointed out that this parliamentary session has failed to meet the legislative standards set by its predecessors, resulting in a disappointing lack of output.

He lamented that rather than concentrating on critical legislation, the House has often become entangled in trivial disputes.

He highlighted that the number of laws passed during this term is significantly lower compared to earlier sessions, both in major legislation and minor instruments.

“I am disappointed in the 8th Parliament overall. We’ve accomplished very little in terms of legislation. The quantity of laws we’ve passed pales in comparison to previous parliaments. Too much time has been squandered on trivial matters instead of focusing on our primary role of lawmaking.”

“Just look at the number of laws enacted over the last four years it’s the lowest we’ve seen. This session has been marred by controversy, with discussions devolving into disputes rather than constructive dialogue, which is truly disheartening.”
