Bantama MP, Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, has expressed disbelief over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) unexpected loss in the 2024 election, despite the party’s extensive efforts across various sectors during its eight-year tenure.
Asenso-Boakye described the defeat as “beyond human imagination,” with the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, attributing it to spiritual factors.
Speaking in an interview on the Ghana Se Sen Show on Lawson TV/Radio, the MP reflected on his campaign experience, sharing how he and his team were confident of victory in Bantama.
“The party campaigned extensively, and in my constituency, during the campaign, some people asked why we were campaigning, as they believed the NPP would retain power. On election day, voter turnout was very low, and we had to urge voters to go out and vote.”
However, he noted that voter turnout was unexpectedly low, with about 30,000 registered voters in his constituency not casting their ballots.
He added that he had to encourage voters to go to the polls, further underlining the perplexing nature of the NPP’s defeat.
Asenso-Boakye is awaiting the findings and recommendations of the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led committee to investigate the causes behind the loss, emphasizing that the NPP will take valuable lessons from this shocking outcome.
In the election results, NDC’s John Mahama emerged victorious with 6,591,790 votes (56.42%), while NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured 4,877,611 votes (41.75%).
