A 22-year-old welder, Williams Amoateng, has been sentenced to 18 years of hard labor by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District for robbery at Asaase Bokankye, near Akropong.
The case, presided over by Judge Gloria Mensha Bonsu, saw Amoateng plead guilty and was convicted based on his admission.
Police Chief Inspector Evans Baaba Ayimbisah, who prosecuted the case, informed the court that the complainant, Blessing Owusu, a tricycle rider from Atwima Agogo, was attacked on February 25, 2025.
Owusu had been operating his tricycle, registered M-2023-AS 2221, in his usual transport business in the Abuakwa area when Amoateng and his accomplice, identified only as Jolley, hired him for a ride to Asaase Bokankye.
During the journey, Amoateng instructed Owusu to stop the tricycle and then, along with Jolley, threatened him with a stick and a stone. The two criminals demanded Owusu’s tricycle, valued at GH¢46,000, along with his earnings of GH¢750. Fearing for his life, Owusu complied, and the men stole the vehicle and cash before fleeing the scene.
Two days later, on February 27, 2025, Owusu saw Amoateng at Asaase Bokankye and raised an alarm. With the help of bystanders, Amoateng was caught and handed over to the Pokukrom Police.
During interrogation, Amoateng confessed to the robbery and revealed that he had sold the stolen tricycle at Kumasi-Alabar. However, when police accompanied him to the location, he failed to identify the buyer.
Following further investigations, Amoateng was charged with robbery, found guilty, and sentenced to 18 years in prison.
