The Nyinahin community in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region is currently experiencing a power outage after a violent confrontation between military personnel and civilians resulted in one death and four injuries.
According to Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for the Ashanti West region, a stray bullet discharged during the altercation struck and damaged an ECG transformer. This damage led to the power cut affecting parts of the community.
Mr. Antwi stated that ECG officials conducted an initial assessment of the situation yesterday. He further explained that a more comprehensive evaluation of the damaged transformer will be carried out today to fully understand the extent of the damage. Following this assessment, the necessary steps to restore power supply will be initiated.
“Our engineers will visit the site today to further assess the transformer and know the extent of damage because we couldn’t do the assessment yesterday due to the chaos,” Mr. Antwi said. “We hope the transformer doesn’t have any damage beyond the oil that was leaking yesterday. Once we confirm it is only the oil, we can top up the oil and restore the supply to the community. So we are hopeful.”
However, Mr. Antwi indicated that the ECG is currently unable to provide a specific timeline for the complete restoration of power to the Nyinahin community. The safety of their engineers and the need for a thorough assessment are paramount before any repair work can commence. The incident has left the community in darkness, compounding the distress caused by the preceding violence.
