11 Dead, 20 Injured After Car Plows Into Crowd at Street Festival in Canada

A devastating incident occurred at a street festival in Vancouver, Canada, when a vehicle struck a crowd, resulting in the deaths of 11 people and injuries to 20 others, according to local police.

The tragedy unfolded on Saturday evening at 8:14 p.m. local time when the vehicle drove into a crowd attending the Filipino Lapu Lapu Day Festival in a South Vancouver neighborhood. The Vancouver Police Department confirmed the incident on social media, expressing their condolences for the victims.

“11 people have now died as a result of the mass-casualty event at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival. Our hearts are with all of the victims, their loved ones, and everyone who has been impacted by this act of violence. This is the darkest day in our city’s history,” the police wrote in a post on X.

A 30-year-old Vancouver man was arrested at the scene, and the police department’s Major Crime Section is leading the investigation. Authorities have stated they are confident the incident was not an act of terrorism.

The festival, which was celebrating Filipino heritage, took place in the city’s South Vancouver neighborhood. Social media footage showed the horrifying scene, with victims and debris scattered across the road. At least seven individuals were seen lying motionless, while a black SUV with significant front-end damage was visible in images from the location.

Vancouver Mayor Kenneth Sim expressed his shock and grief in a social media post: “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.”

Canadian political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, also shared their condolences and support. “I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver. We are all mourning with you,” Carney wrote.
