Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has revealed that 107 foreign nationals have been deported since he took office as part of the government’s crackdown on illegal mining, or galamsey.
Of those deported, 92 were Chinese citizens, with another 13 expected to follow suit next week.
During a meeting with Imams and Zongo Chiefs on April 3, Muntaka stressed the severity of galamsey and its damaging effects on the country. He pointed out that both Chinese and other foreign nationals have been involved in these illegal activities.
The Minister reiterated the government’s firm stance against galamsey, declaring a zero-tolerance policy. “If any foreigner is caught engaging in this illegal activity, we will immediately deport them,” he affirmed.
